Despite the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, there are skills that are unlikely to lose their value in the coming years. Moreover, they may become the main advantage in the labor market.
Career expert and founder of the 80,000 Hours organization, Benjamin Todd, shared with CNBC insights on skills that will see increased demand.

Communication

The first among such skills the expert identifies is communication. He explains that as artificial intelligence capabilities grow in generating vast amounts of content, the ability to determine needed content, assess its quality, and build audience trust will become increasingly crucial.
“In practice, this can manifest as skillfully utilizing social media, engaging followers through newsletters, gaining experience in PR, or organizing in-person events,” Todd emphasizes.

Social Skills

Social skills will remain equally important. Research by Harvard University economist David Deming has shown that professions where these skills are key tend to yield higher incomes over time.
In Todd’s view, even if artificial intelligence learns to interact better with people, human connection will not diminish in value. Therefore, the capacity to establish rapport, understand others’ needs, recognize emotions, and resolve conflicts will become even more sought after.

Leadership and Decision-Making Ability

Another skill that will remain indispensable is the capacity to assess situations and make decisions.
Todd notes that as early as 2017, an analysis of the most in-demand job roles revealed this ability as one of the most sought-after. With the development of AI, its significance is only growing, as artificial intelligence is increasingly adept at handling routine tasks, while humans are tasked with determining what actions are worthwhile.
The expert advises learning from individuals you trust most in making complex decisions and adopting their approach.

Operations Management

According to Todd, every organization requires individuals responsible for the company’s daily operations. This includes, for example, personnel selection, financial system setup, and office administration.
While AI is already taking over some routine tasks, complex duties demanding sound judgment still necessitate human expertise.
“Many organizations we interact with report a constant search for individuals with these skills,” the expert notes.
He also recommends gaining practical experience by participating in project organization, event planning, or managing an online business.

Working with Artificial Intelligence

The final, and perhaps most critical, skill is the proficiency in effectively utilizing artificial intelligence tools.
The expert explains that while current AI models excel at specific individual tasks, they are not yet capable of fully managing complex, long-term projects or coordinating large teams.
“There’s an advantage in being the ‘human in the loop’ who can bridge these gaps and validate key decisions,” he states.
Todd advises studying the strengths and weaknesses of current AI models, learning to verify their outputs, and understanding which problems warrant prioritization. According to him, programming skills can be beneficial but are not essential for effective collaboration with artificial intelligence.
